The 7 Steps In the Fire Damage Restoration Process

5.svg

Removal of Smoke and Soot From All Surfaces

SERVPRO professionals use specialized equipment and techniques for larger, commercial spaces to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls and other surfaces of commercial structures. We will strive to clean those materials deemed as cleanable to their pre-loss condition. If painted surfaces are not able to be cleaned to pre-loss condition, the surface will still be cleaned to prepare for sealer and paint. Contents and personal property will be separated, and we will save any items that do not clean completely. SERVPRO professionals will not throw anything out unless you authorize it. Specialty items, such as those used in manufacturing, industrial application, or healthcare will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Specialty contractors will be utilized as needed. We may remove affected materials while minimizing damage to unaffected or restorable surfaces. Our professionals can inventory non-salvageable property and assist in packing, relocating, cleaning and storing business property. We also offer restoration of specialty items such as art, electronics and documents.

Deodorization

Deodorization will be thorough and effective provided that all sources of odor have been removed, cleaned, or sealed.
7.svg

Restoration

Restoration is the final step in getting your business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting and installing new carpet; or it may entail major reconstruction of the affected areas of your business.
1.svg

Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call your local SERVPRO or SERVPRO’S Customer Care Center, both of which are staffed 24 hours a day. Our specialists will ask a series of questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us dispatch the nearest SERVPRO professionals to your location.
2.svg

Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

Our professionals will carefully inspect and test all areas of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke and soot damage. This step is crucial in developing a plan of action. We work alongside investigators, insurance companies and the fire marshal to determine the type, degree of and extent of damage to materials and belongings. We work to identify possible preexisting damage, and help identify health and safety issues. We check the affected area for visible hazardous property damage, visible electrical hazards, and other harmful conditions. Specialized procedures are required for materials like mold, lead paint, and asbestos. If we are advised that there is a significant presence of these types of materials, or believe there is a reasonable likelihood that such materials exist in the structure, we will notify the involved parties so they may determine an appropriate course of action. Upon completion of inspection and assessment, we will give you a summary of our findings and explain the best steps for restoration. Our initial inspection of the premises is designed to identify how much damage has occurred and plan the necessary emergency work.

Immediate Services to Secure the Structure

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls and roofs which can leave your facility unsecured. To secure your property and to protect it against further damage, SERVPRO can board up missing windows and walls and facilitate temporary repairs to damaged roofs. We also offer debris removal, installation of emergency power and temporary lighting, and temporary structural repairs, and more.
4.svg

Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

A drying plan is established, taking into consideration a variety of factors such as affected materials, indoor conditions, and the amount of space that must be conditioned. This involves extracting or pumping out standing water and using drying equipment designed to assist with evaporating water from materials and dehumidifying the air, bringing the area back to normal.

FAQ icon
How to clean after fire damage?

The majority of cleaning after a fire is working to remove soot residues from the structure and contents of the home or business. We have a specific process we follow, which is tailored to each fire damage situation.

What is the first thing I should do after a fire?

Experiencing a fire to your home or business can be traumatic and stressful, and knowing what to do after a fire can seem overwhelming. First, contact a local disaster relief agency and your insurance company for immediate assistance, especially if you’ve been displaced. Try to locate any necessary documents you’ll need, like a driver’s license and other records, but don’t enter the structure unless the fire department has deemed it safe for you to do so, first.

How long will the fire restoration process take?

The timeline for a fire restoration varies greatly, and depends on the severity of fire, smoke and soot damage. The size of the building and the amount of contents also helps determine the length of time for restoration. SERVPRO technicians will complete a full scope of work at the beginning of the project and will provide you with an estimated timeline so you know what to expect.
